Customer Support & Reviews
Pride Counseling is an online mental health therapy platform designed for use by members of the LGBTQ community. Anyone can seek services with the company, but its therapists are trained and specialized in matters relating to LGBTQ. The platform is available to anyone in the United States, as well as people in the United Kingdom.
Find What You Need
Services Offered by Pride Counseling
Pride Counseling is an online platform designed specifically for the LGBTQ community. Studies show that LGBTQ individuals are twice as likely to have a mental health disorder as compared to heterosexual men and women. Pride Counseling saw the need and opened its online doors to help. It offers its plan participants compassion and acceptance for any issues they may be facing.
Much like other platforms, you sign up, answer some questions about yourself and then are matched to a therapist in a short time. The signup form is lengthier than many other mental health platforms, since some of the questions center around gender identity and sexual orientation. You can message, text, talk over the phone, or through video chat with your therapist. Messaging and texting can occur anytime. Members can schedule live chat sessions as well.
Pride Counseling has licensed, trained and accredited clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and therapists with either Master’s or Doctorate degrees. They are required to have at least three years and 1000 hours of professional experience to work with Pride Counseling. All the therapists specialize in the LGBTQ community, but have different areas of focus and expertise. If you start with a therapist and don’t feel they are a good fit for you, you can always make a request to change.
In addition to issues specific to the LGBTQ community, Pride Counseling also offers mental health help for the following:
- Family Conflicts
- Self Esteem
Pride Counselors will not treat anyone who is a minor or under the care of a legal guardian and will not fulfill court ordered therapy.
Pride Counseling Privacy
When you sign up for Pride Counseling, you’ll be assigned a dedicated, discreet “room” to discuss whatever you would like with your therapist. Information stays confidential and you can digitally “shred” any message you send the therapist, but would like to remove from your account.
Pride Counseling is a sister site of BetterHelp, and much like BetterHelp – the databases use banking-grade encryption to protect your information. The databases are also spread out across multiple data centers for an added layer of security and protection. In the event the databases are stolen or tampered with, the information will become scrambled so it cannot be accessed by anyone.
Pride Counseling and BetterHelp’s privacy policies are the same. The company says it operates in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
What Medications are Prescribed by Pride Counseling?
As mentioned, Pride Counseling offers online access to psychologists, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and licensed professional counselors. All these types of therapists are equipped to treat mental health conditions, but they cannot diagnose them. Pride Counseling does not offer psychiatry services, and therefore none of the counselors you will be matched with are able to prescribe medications.
If you are seeking a letter of recommendation for hormone replacement therapy or gender affirming surgery, it’s important to note that it’s left up to the individual therapist you work with on whether to provide that letter. Pride Counseling says many of the therapists on its platform do not provide these types of letters or recommendations. The reason is because of the limitations of online therapy and the inability of your therapist to be able to see you in person and face to face to be able to make a full evaluation and assessment.
Customer Reviews of Pride Counseling
Unlike many online therapy sites, Pride Counseling’s website is bare bones. There’s a home page that encourages you to sign up, a contact page and an FAQ page. The site doesn’t offer as much information about its services or its operations as other platforms do.
The app and site are fairly easy to use once you sign up, and by and large, users seem to be happy with the therapy services they receive. You will find some negative reviews from people who had billing issues or had problems with specific counselors. Many complaints about specific therapists tend to deal with the inability to communicate with them or a sense they aren’t listening well or at all.
Cost of Pride Counseling
Pride Counseling is a membership service but it does not require a contract and can be cancelled at any time. Cost is based on your location, preferences, and therapist availability. You will be billed for the service every four weeks. The platform does not accept any form of insurance.
All plans include unlimited messaging with your therapist and one live interaction – either through chat, by phone or over video – each week. The live sessions can last between 30 and 45 minutes.
Financial aid is available. The company determines who gets it based on a questionnaire about your personal and financial situation and history.
